Choosing The Right Builder

When building a new home, one of the most important decisions you will make is choosing the right builder. A builder who aligns with your communication style and home vision is essential. Here are some helpful tips for choosing the best builder for you:

Research  - With new construction on the rise in most areas, an abundance of homebuilders are available. Start by searching based on your future home's location, and narrow based on portfolios, floor plans, pricing and past projects. Once you have narrowed your search down to a small list, conduct interviews to decide which builder is right for you.

Quality  - When you build a home, it likely won't be a temporary residence, but a place where you and your family will spend years to come. Focus on quality when you are choosing a builder, and ensure that the builder can create something that is perfect for you and your family. Ask to tour some of the builder's past projects, check references and ask plenty of questions.

Transparency  - When choosing a builder, it's important to ensure that this person will be transparent with you throughout the building process. Look for a builder who will give you an honest timeline and price estimate. Transparent builders should also be able to lend information about the products and materials used, as well as their relationships with contractors and other people who will be working on your home.

Communication  - As with any relationship, communication is essential. Find a builder who has a communication style that syncs with yours. As you are going through the preliminary processes, note if your prospective builder takes long periods of time to respond to you or doesn't ask questions or listen to your vision of the home. These can be early signs that you will experience frustration during the building process.

Specialists  - If your dream home isn't anything out of the ordinary, just a general builder is likely suitable. However, if your home has unusual features, try exploring specialists to work on certain projects in the home. Look for a builder who is open to your vision of your dream home, and willing to work with you to create a home you will love.
